Iowa police arrested a woman on Monday who allegedly broke into a home and tried to steal an 11-month-old baby.
Jennifer Webster, 49, reportedly knocked on a door in Davenport and asked the baby’s great-grandmother, a resident, for water. The woman provided Webster with a bottle of water and closed the door — only for Webster to knock again moments later, as per KWQC.
The great-grandmother allegedly informed Webster she could not enter — prompting Webster to force her way in while shouting, “I want that baby.” Webster is then accused of grabbing the infant from a high chair during a struggle with the great-grandmother.
According to KWQC, Davenport police arrived at the scene and found Webster on the floor, squeezing the infant’s throat. The baby could be heard screaming and gasping for breath.
A police officer struck Webster after she refused to release the baby during the three-minute altercation. Webster and the baby were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.
An order of protection was filed against Webster, who is charged with second-degree kidnapping of someone younger than 18, child stealing, interference with official acts, and first-degree burglary.
Davenport police said Webster did not know the baby or anyone who lived at the home where Monday’s incident transpired.
