CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Main Street pedestrian viaduct in Champaign will be shut for 90 days due to “public safety, health, and welfare reasons,” stated the city.

Champaign initially declared the viaduct’s closure to pedestrians on Thursday. During this period, community members needing to cross between First Street and Chestnut are affected.

Street/Main Street are asked to use the sidewalk along University Avenue instead.

A city spokesperson mentioned that on the morning of July 3, they had to remove “accumulated rubbish, furniture, and other waste” that had been left there. Consequently, the viaduct was barricaded to prevent waste from piling up again.

“The City of Champaign appreciates the cooperation of travelers through this area,” a city spokesperson said in a news release.
