BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) is notifying residents that the state’s annual tax-free weekend is scheduled from August 1 through August 3.

During the sales tax holiday, shoppers can purchase certain back-to-school items without paying the state’s 6% sales tax or applicable local taxes.

The tax exemption applies to all retailers, for both in-person and online purchases.

Items exempt from sales tax include:

  • School supplies such as calculators, musical instruments and headphones.
  • Computers and related technology, including printers and software.
  • Clothing and footwear, including caps and gowns, swimwear and school uniforms.
  • Bed and bath items such as bedspreads, sheets, pillows, towels and shower curtains.

Any qualifying items, whether new or used, are exempt from tax irrespective of their cost. Shoppers are advised to review the complete list of taxable and non-taxable items here prior to shopping.

Last year, South Carolinians saved more than $1.3 million dollars in sales tax.

Retailers must take part and are prohibited from charging tax on qualifying items during this period. Businesses can access resources, including filing instructions, here.
