Individuals subscribing to SuperGrok can now experiment with the AI chatbot’s new “Companions” avatars, announced xAI owner Elon Musk on Monday morning. At present, the available companions include Ani, an anime-themed avatar, and Rudy, depicted as a whimsical red panda.
According to TestingCatalog, Ani features an “NSFW” mode where she is dressed in lingerie. (A fair warning: searching for posts related to the characters on X may lead you to NSFW videos.)
Currently, users must navigate to settings to enable the companions, though Musk mentioned that activating them will become easier in a few days as he referred to this phase as a “soft launch.” Despite being a free Grok user, I found I could chat with both avatars upon launching the Grok app, indicating they might be more broadly accessible.
Users have found that another AI character called “Chad” is in the works. The app already has a voice mode where you can chat back and forth with a faceless version of Grok, and that has an NSFW toggle.
The addition of the animated characters follows Grok posting antisemitism and Hitler praise last week, which xAI said was due to an “update to a code path upstream of the @grok bot.”
