Human who lived 315,000 years ago comes back to life in reconstruction

It is the closest thing to meeting a long-lost relative—one separated from us by roughly 315,000 years.

Using fragments of an ancient fossil skull, scientists have reconstructed the face of one of the earliest known members of our species in a striking digital portrait.

Described as the oldest known representation of Homo sapiens, the reconstruction depicts a dark-skinned man with long black hair, a thick beard, deep-set eyes, a broad nose and full lips.

The face was recreated from the remains of an individual discovered by a miner at a mineral extraction site in Jebel Irhoud, Morocco.

The discovery transformed the accepted timeline of human evolution, revealing that Homo sapiens existed at least 100,000 years earlier than scientists had previously believed.

Now, the latest reconstruction offers a vivid new perspective on what our early ancestors may have looked like.

“The archaeological site of Jebel Irhoud houses the oldest fossils attributed to Homo sapiens, dated to approximately 315,000 years before present,” the researchers wrote in a paper published in the journal Heritage.

“This study presents a forensic facial approximation based on data from a three-dimensional composite skull derived from Layer 7 of the site.”

Scientists pieced together the ancient face from fossil fragments combined with state-of-the-art technology

By combining scans, photographs and video footage of the skull fragment known as Irhoud 1 with jawbone and tooth fossils unearthed nearby, the team created a 3D model of the skull

One version is a minimalist grayscale reconstruction designed to reveal the skull’s underlying anatomy

When the skull was discovered in the 1960s, archaeologists initially identified it as Neanderthal and estimated its age at about 40,000 years. That interpretation changed in 2017, when researchers established that the specimen was approximately 315,000 years old and belonged to Homo sapiens.

To build the reconstruction, the team combined scans, photographs and video footage of the Irhoud 1 skull fragment with jaw and tooth fossils found at the site.

Researchers then adjusted a modern human anatomical template to fit the fossil’s contours, digitally adding estimated layers of muscle, fat and skin.

The work resulted in two versions of the face. The first is a restrained grayscale image that focuses on the structure and anatomy beneath the skin.

The second is a lifelike colour portrait featuring skin, hair and a beard, giving viewers a powerful impression of one of humanity’s earliest known ancestors.

The study was led by Brazilian 3D reconstruction specialist Cícero Moraes. However, the researchers noted that the realistic portrait necessarily includes an element of artistic interpretation.

Fossils cannot reveal details such as skin tone, lighting, hairstyle or facial hair with certainty.

Those elements were instead informed by anthropological research on ancient and modern human populations, creating a plausible image of how a person living in North Africa around 315,000 years ago might have appeared.

They also cautioned that the digital models do not show exactly what any one individual looked like, as the fossil fragments used to complete the reconstruction were likely to have been from several different people.
