There is optimism that affordable terraces and townhouses, which can receive approval within 10 days, will enable more New South Wales residents to enter the housing market and expedite the construction process.

NSW Premier Chris Minns released the state’s housing pattern book today, with eight designs chosen from several internationally renowned firms.

Initially offered at $1 for six months, and $1000 thereafter, the designs furnish blueprints for townhouses, terraces, and manor houses.

“For an extended period, many residents in NSW have been unable to access the housing market due to escalating prices and an overly complicated building system,” Minns stated.

“This pattern book is about giving people more choice, faster approvals, and affordable, high-quality homes, whether you’re a young person trying to get in, a family needing more space, or a downsizer looking to stay close to the community you know.

“This is a practical step to make the housing system fairer and make sure NSW remains a place where the next generation can afford to live and thrive.”

NSW government architect Abbie Galvin said the intention of the housing pattern book was to provide a “quicker and easier to build new low-rise homes that offer housing diversity for the whole community”.

“The pattern book offers practical and sustainable designs that can be adapted to suit many neighbourhoods, positively contributing to the character of a street.”
