A 17-year-old girl in Texas has been apprehended on accusations of assisting her 18-year-old boyfriend, known as a gang associate, during an alleged escape from law enforcement on foot. This pursuit concluded with him reportedly using a machine gun to shoot and severely wound a police K-9.

Desmariah Ramos was detained on Saturday and is anticipated to face charges for hindering apprehension or prosecution, as authorities confirmed to Law&Crime.

Her boyfriend, Darrin King, is charged with multiple felonies, including six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, interfering with a public service animal, evading arrest, resisting arrest, and retaliation, according to records.

King is also charged federally with one count of possession of an unregistered firearm.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, King on May 10 fled from officers with the Waco Police Department who were responding to a call regarding a civil disturbance involving a firearm at a residence in the 2700 block of Homan Avenue.

“A police K9 was deployed in pursuit of King, who allegedly produced a firearm and fired multiple shots at the dog, striking the K9 twice in the neck and once in the chest,” federal prosecutors wrote. “King was subsequently taken into custody and the firearm was recovered. The firearm was allegedly equipped with a machine gun conversion device (MCD), also known as a ‘Glock switch,’ allowing the firearm to fire as a fully automatic weapon.”

The 911 call stemmed from threats King allegedly made against Ramos’ family while at the family’s Homan Avenue home. As part of the investigation, police searched cellphones belong to both King and Ramos, which showed that Ramos attempted to help King avoid police by providing him updates on the location of officers searching for him, Waco CBS affiliate KWTX reported.

“They right there near u,” Ramos allegedly wrote in one of the messages reportedly sent about five minutes after police began pursuing King, who at one point responded, “im hiding rn [right now].”

While King was allegedly hiding, Ramos is accused of texting him, “They got a law in that alley ur in,” and “They at the end of both sides,” per the report.

Police later clarified that the K-9 involved in the incident, whose name is “Andor,” suffered two gunshot wounds to the neck and one to the shoulder. After undergoing an “extensive medical procedure,” he survived the shooting and was released from the Small Animal Hospital at Texas A&M University and back to the department. He will be medically retired, police said.

King is currently being held in the McLennan County Jail on $2.5 million bond. Ramos has not been listed among the inmates at the jail since Monday afternoon.

The McLennan County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to multiple requests from Law&Crime seeking information about formal charges against Ramos.
