Stephen Colbert gets solidarity from fellow late-night hosts after cancellation news

Stephen Colbert has been showered with messages of support and love from his late-night peers after broadcasting the news that CBS plans to end “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” next May. Jimmy Fallon expressed his disbelief, saying he was “just as shocked as everyone,” while Seth Meyers praised Colbert as an amazing host and comedian and an even better person. John Oliver mentioned his anticipation to see what Colbert and his team will create in the last 10 months of the show. Jimmy Kimmel used strong language in criticizing CBS, and Andy Cohen mentioned it as a bleak day for the network. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, who has been often satirized by Colbert, used Truth Social to express his delight, saying, “I absolutely love” that Colbert got “fired.”

Some of the reaction from the late-night world:

John Oliver

“I adore Stephen, I adore his team. I adore that show. It’s deeply unfortunate. Part of me looks forward to seeing what they will do over the coming 10 months. This is terrible news for the comedy world. Late-night shows have always held significance for me, not just due to my work on them, but also because, growing up in England, I used to watch Letterman’s show, which later became Stephen’s show. It seemed like such a glamorous world. Getting to be on Letterman’s and Stephen’s shows has always been a high point, making this news extremely sad for me. I’m eager to see what he embarks on next because he’s unstoppable.” — shared by HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” host during an event in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

Jimmy Fallon

“I’m just as amazed as everyone. Stephen is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and humorous hosts ever. I genuinely expected to be alongside him for years more. I’m disappointed that my family and friends will now need to find a new program at 11:30 every night.” — shared by the NBC “Tonight Show” host on Instagram.

Seth Meyers

“For as great a comedian and host (as) he is, @stephenathome is an even better person. I’m going to miss having him on TV every night but I’m excited he can no longer use the excuse that he’s ‘too busy to hang out’ with me.” — the NBC “Late Night” host, on Instagram

Jimmy Kimmel

“Love you Stephen.” — the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host, on Instagram

Andy Cohen

“It is a very sad day for CBS that they are getting out of the late-night race. I mean, they are turning off the lights after the news.” — the “Watch What Happens Live” host, in an interview.
