A mother in Toombs County, Georgia, has admitted guilt related to the death of her four-year-old daughter in Toombs County Superior Court.

On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Taylor Marie Hughes entered a guilty plea in the death of her daughter, Reese Carter Hughes, who died on March 14, 2025.

The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) investigation discovered that Hughes did not safeguard her daughter from abuse by her boyfriend, Seth Brown. Hughes also neglected to seek medical help for Taylor.

Before her plea, Hughes provided critical information and agreed to testify against Brown in his upcoming trial.

Chief Judge Robert Reeves approved Hughes’s guilty plea for one charge of Felony Murder and two charges of First-Degree Cruelty to Children. Hughes received a life sentence along with an additional twenty years.
