A 31-year-old man in Texas will spend the rest of his life in prison for shooting several people, resulting in one death, another person losing their sight, and several others being hospitalized.

A Brazos County jury on Monday sentenced Larry Bollin to life in a state correctional facility for the 2021 murder of Timothy Smith, as announced by authorities. The same group of jurors found Bollin guilty of one count of first-degree murder relating to the deadly shooting on Friday. Besides his incarceration, the jury also imposed a $10,000 fine on Bollin.

According to a news release from the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, Bollin was an employee at Kent Moore Cabinets located in the 300 block of Stone City Drive in Bryan, Texas, on April 8, 2021. He arrived at work that day with a handgun hidden in his lunch cooler. Authorities reported that after taking his afternoon break, Bollin was in a warehouse at the Bryan location, about 100 miles northeast of Houston, when he “retrieved the handgun from his cooler and fired multiple shots directly at Smith without any provocation or warning.”

After fatally wounding Smith, Bollin fired “at least” 20 additional shots in various directions, hitting numerous other victims, including Walter Vega, Juan Ordonez, Isidoro Leal, and Juan Uribe. At some point during the continued violence, a man named Nathan Whited “attempted to bravely intervene” and end the shooting, even asking Bollin “why he shot the individuals in the warehouse.”

Bollin answered with increasingly cold-blooded violence.

“The defendant responded to Whited ‘I’ll show you why.’ Bollin then reloaded his firearm and shot Whited multiple times, sending Whited to the hospital. Bollin then fled the scene and shot Whited in the back as he lay on the floor defenseless,” the release states.

Bollin then fled from the Kent Moore Cabinets warehouse and returned to his home in Iola, Texas, which is around 30 miles northeast of Bryan. While Bollin was at his home, a Department of Public Safety trooper named Juan Tovar approached the home in an effort to apprehend Bollin, the sheriff’s office said.

“Bollin then took aim and shot Trooper Tovar with a rifle as Trooper Tovar retreated in his patrol vehicle,” prosecutors said. “Tovar was shot in the left eye and lost his eye as a result.”

During the sentencing hearing, the mothers of injured victims Nathan Whited and Juan Ordonez as well as the wife of Juan Uribe read victim impact statements detailing how their relatives have suffered physically and emotionally as a result of the shooting.

“Brazos County was changed forever by this Defendant’s actions. The jury protected us all today, when they sentenced Larry Bollin to life.” District Attorney Jarvis Parsons and Assistant District Attorney and Jennifer Hebert, who led the trial team, said in a joint statement.

Proceedings in Bollins’ case were stagnant for several years after health officials in 2023 deemed him incompetent to stand trial. However, after Bollins received more than a year of treatment from a state hospital, officials changed their assessment and his prosecution went forward, local CBS and CW affiliate KBTX reported.
