Things to remember when driving in the rain

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Driving safely should always be a priority, especially when dealing with the nature of our summer showers and storms.

While you might leave your house under plenty of sunshine, there is always the chance a pop-up bout of rain will impact your drive.

When you encounter a sudden shower, be sure to use caution in your driving.

Turn on headlights, slow down, increase following distance, and limit distractions so you can keep control of your car.

Encountering water on the road can compromise tire traction. At higher speeds, water cannot be displaced as effectively by the tread of the tire.

Hydroplaning can occur when water accumulates beneath your tires, resulting in the steering wheel feeling weightless after a slight jerk.

Reducing your speed helps maintain tire contact with the road. Moreover, regularly check your tire tread depth and ensure they are properly inflated.

Adequate tread depth and pressure effectively displaces water to lessen the risk of hydroplaning.

If your vehicle hydroplanes, gently let off the throttle and do not make sudden movements with steering or braking.

Remain calm as your vehicle regains traction when you feel the front tires grip the roadway.
