Thunderstorms caused ground stops on Friday afternoon at both Midway and O’Hare airports, resulting in delays of approximately 45 minutes at Midway and about 25 minutes at O’Hare.

On Friday morning, the National Weather Service released a special weather statement concerning funnel clouds, affecting areas from LaSalle County to southern Cook County and regions south of that line.

Funnel clouds rarely touch the ground and typically do not pose a hazard, Butler said. Some were spotted earlier Friday near Ottawa.
