In the recent analysis of Mattoon’s drinking water, no traces of the harmful algal bloom neurological toxin were found.

Tests conducted on Thursday, July 31, indicated toxin levels at 0.000 ppb, significantly below the EPA’s advisory limit of 0.30 ppb.

The City of Mattoon plans to continue testing, with the next set of samples slated for August 4. Future results will be made available on the city’s website.

The following are the previous most recent samples collected with results in reverse chronological order:

  • July 29: 0.042 ppb
  • July 24: 0.038 ppb
  • July 21: 0.14 ppb
  • July 18: 0.10 ppb
  • July 17: 0.058 ppb
  • July 16: 0.215 ppb

Mattoon has implemented both immediate and ongoing adjustments to lower the levels of the toxin, including boosting powder-activated carbon (PAC) and chlorine usage, executing directional flushing of the distribution system, and devising long-term strategies for lake and plant treatment.
