Coles Co. Sheriff investigating deadly crash, victim identified

COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Coles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deadly crash that took place last week.

At approximately 11:07 p.m. on July 23, deputies from the Coles County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a collision on Old State Road near County Road 400 East. Upon their arrival, they discovered a 2014 Ford SUV had been traveling east on Old State Road when it struck a man riding a mini bike.

The mini bike rider was identified as 35-year-old Earon Criswell of Mattoon. Criswell was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries two days later.

The circumstances of the crash are still being investigated, the sheriff’s department said.

Assisting the Coles County Sheriff’s Office in this incident were the Mattoon Police Department, Lake Land College Police Department, Mitchell Jerdan EMS, Mattoon Fire Department, Coles-Moultrie 911, and the Air Evac Life Team.
