More than two decades after it first hit cinemas and captured hearts around the world, a sequel to Bend It Like Beckham is officially in development.

Director Gurinder Chadha has confirmed that a sequel to the 2002 cult football classic is in the works, aiming for a 2027 release to commemorate the film’s 25th anniversary and coincide with the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The original film, featuring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, followed Jess and Jules, two teenagers challenging cultural and societal norms to pursue their passion for football. Filled with humor, emotion, family dynamics, and victorious moments, it quickly became a cherished football movie.

Now, Chadha says the time feels right to return to that world.

“A lot has changed since the original movie,” she stated to the BBC. “But I believe there are still those who view women’s participation in football with skepticism and don’t take it seriously.”

She mentioned that the surge in interest surrounding women’s football, particularly after England’s Lionesses clinched the Euro 2025 title, has made the concept of a sequel feel especially timely.

The format remains undecided – whether a movie or TV series – but Chadha expresses hopes of bringing back some original cast members and hinted at potential cameos from current England internationals.

“I’m quite certain that everyone will be eager to return,” she commented. “Everything depends on the script and whether the original cast approves. I am working diligently to ensure each returning character has a substantial arc.”

And while David Beckham may no longer be the poster boy of English football, the spirit of the story lives on. So what will they call it this time? Bend It Like Kelly? Time will tell.
