MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Mattoon’s golf cart ordinance went into effect on Friday, meaning residents can now cruise around select parts of the city.

Vehicles are permitted to traverse streets and specific alleys where the speed limit is 30 or lower, but are prohibited from main roads. Some residents believe this offers a convenient mode of transportation within the area, while others are skeptical.

A resident from Mattoon mentioned that he’s observed golf carts provide seniors with a means to navigate small towns; however, he is uncertain about their practicality in a larger city like Mattoon. Meanwhile, a company selling these carts and other types of vehicles claims the new legislation’s guidelines prioritize safety.

“The city’s website features a map indicating that while many side streets are accessible, certain main roads are off-limits. There are crossings available for navigating these,” said Adam Fifield, general manager of Pilson Powersports. “It’s crucial to adhere to the regulations, staying below 30 miles per hour and behaving responsibly to ensure everyone can enjoy this.”

Carts will also be required to have certain safety features like brake lights, seatbelts and a rearview mirror.

Furthermore, the ordinance mandates that the Illinois Department of Transportation erect golf cart crossing signs. However, IDOT has yet to provide an update on when these signs will be implemented, despite the plan to have them installed by Aug. 1.
