A representative from the St. Marys, Georgia, Police Department reported officers were called to the Cumberland Oaks Apartments late Sunday night in response to “threats.”

ST. MARYS, Ga. — A man from Jacksonville has died after being shot by police officers from St. Marys, Georgia, during a “brief encounter” at an apartment complex on Sunday night, the St. Marys Police Department spokesperson confirmed.

According to police spokesperson Lt. Ian Dent, officers were dispatched to a call about “threats” around 11:06 p.m. at the Cumberland Oaks Apartments on Mary Powell Drive.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a woman called 911, saying the man was making threats to kill her and was grabbing her aggressively.

Upon their arrival, officers encountered 27-year-old Gregory Peter Paige, also from Jacksonville. After a short confrontation, officers fired at Paige, striking him, as reported by Dent.

Dent said medical aid was immediately rendered, and Paige was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated that officers were trying to enter an apartment to arrest Paige and encountered him in the doorway, which led them to open fire.

GBI did not specify whether Paige had a weapon at the time of the shooting, saying the incident was still under investigation.
