CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Agriculture is an economic driver in Central Illinois and knowing its impact paid off, in cash, for top students.

The Youth Crop Scouting Competition took place at the University of Illinois’s Crop Sciences Research and Education Center in Champaign.

Teams were made up of as many as seven high school students who spent the entire year preparing for the competition. Participants tackled a written exam and were asked to identify different crops, pieces of equipment, and insects.

They were evaluated on their expertise, professionalism, and ability to work together across ten different stations. According to a representative from the University of Illinois, agriculture is a crucial part of the region, and it’s vital for young people to gain knowledge about it.

“This gives them exposure to experiences beyond the classroom. You get to go out and enjoy yourself, and that’s truly what agriculture is all about,” stated Meagan Diss, an extension specialist. “We’re out in the field, having a good time, and it’s an amazing opportunity to learn and discover before choosing a college major. It allows students to experience it directly before making those decisions.”

Over $1,000 in total prizes was given to the top four teams. The two leading teams will move on to the regional competition, scheduled to happen in Ames, Iowa, on September 13.
