Questions are now being raised about how the murdered mum slipped through the system, only months after the alarm was raised about her soon-to-be killer husband.

Shafiqa Husseini was killed by her husband, Mirza Husseini, who then took his own life, on Sunday, leaving behind six children.

Her eldest child released a heartfelt statement to 9News expressing the family’s grief.

“We are still in disbelief and are finding it difficult to accept,” he said.

“Mum took care of us children and gave all her life to every single one of us.”

Detectives revisited the family home in Bordertown as part of their investigation today, just as advocates questioned how Shafiqa slipped through the system after raising concerns about her husband months before her murder.

“Exactly what happened, and what was reported to the authorities, and whether this was a case that fell through the cracks,” advocate Arman Abrahimzadeh said.

Some have highlighted the lack of readily accessible domestic violence support in the region, noting the nearest help centre is located in Mount Gambier, a two-hour drive from Bordertown.

“It is very hard, and nobody can say or understand what is going on inside people. I think it is very important to understand, to talk to each other,” community leader Yunus Noori said.

Bordertown Mayor Liz Goossens acknowledged the service gap.

“Like all regional areas, we are lacking in those services and certainly would appreciate all the help we can have,” she said.
