(NEXSTAR) — London’s authorities have disclosed the reason behind the death of Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic musician who passed away “surrounded by love” in late last month.

At 76, Osbourne succumbed to a heart attack, as noted in a death certificate examined by The New York Times and other UK media outlets. Cardiac arrest and coronary artery disease were identified as contributing factors, alongside his Parkinson’s diagnosis.

Osbourne announced in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The family confirmed on July 22 that the Black Sabbath founder passed that morning, “with his family and surrounded by love.” The statement, signed by his wife of over 40 years, Sharon, and his children Aimee, Kelly, Jack, and Louis, conveyed their grief.

Earlier in July, Osbourne joined Black Sabbath’s original lineup — Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward — for a final concert in Birmingham, England.

“It’s my time to go Back to the Beginning….time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” Osbourne shared on social media in February. “How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.”

In 2023, Osbourne announced that his touring era had “ended” due to spinal injuries sustained in a 2019 accident. That year, he canceled tour plans because of health issues, including a “bad fall” in which he injured vertebrae in his neck.

Osbourne was laid to rest on July 30.

Thousands of Black Sabbath fans paid their respects as his hearse made its way through the streets of Birmingham, the English city where he grew up and where the band was formed in 1968.

He is survived by Sharon and their three children — Kelly, Aimee and Jack — as well as his eldest son, Louis, from a previous marriage.
