A 19-year-old University of Colorado Boulder student was killed and another student was critically injured in a shooting at a Halloween house party, police said.
Boulder Police officers were called to the University Hill neighborhood at about 11:28 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of gunfire. One of the victims, a 19-year-old CU Boulder student, had been shot.
The student, whose name has not been released, was taken to Boulder Community Hospital, where he died from his injuries Sunday morning.
A second 19-year-old male student from the university was also wounded and remained in critical condition, according to police.
Earlier that evening, officers had responded to a noise complaint, prompting the party to end and hundreds of people to leave the area near Marine Street.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said at a news conference that organizers had registered the party with the university in advance. A live band was performing at the event.
Police said the home’s residents were cited for hosting a nuisance party. After most people left, a small group remained inside the house.
‘Detectives believe a group of individuals later attempted to force their way into the house,’ investigators said. ‘Shortly after that scuffle, shots were fired inside the home, striking the two victims.’

Residents and homeowners were permitted to return by about 2 a.m. Police said the suspects were believed to have left the city by then.
“My heart breaks for the victims and for everyone impacted by this senseless violence,” Redfearn said. “Our community deserves to feel safe, and we will not accept this kind of violence in Boulder.”
“I want to assure these families and our community that we are doing everything in our power to find those responsible and hold them accountable,” Redfearn added.
The University of Colorado Boulder said it was “deeply saddened” by the death of one student and the critical injuries suffered by another in an “off-campus overnight shooting.”
“This is an incredibly traumatic event for our campus community. Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those impacted by this tragedy, especially those students, families, faculty and staff who have been directly impacted or experienced significant loss,” the university said.
Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said the party had been registered with the university in advance and featured a live band, with hundreds of people attending
“The health, safety and well-being of our community is our top priority. The Boulder Police Department is investigating, and BPD and CUPD will have additional officers patrolling the University Hill neighborhood in response to the incident.”
“We are also working closely with those we know to be directly impacted to provide them with support. We want our campus to know there are resources available to anyone who needs help navigating this difficult time.”
Nicole Speer, a member of the Boulder City Council, said she was “devastated for the victim’s family, friends and classmates and the entire CU community” as they mourned the death of the 19-year-old student.
“My thoughts are especially with those closest to him, including the family members who received unimaginable news this morning and those who witnessed this traumatic event,” Speer said.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe whether they are at home, in class, at work or gathered with friends. Violence leaves behind so much grief and trauma. My heart is with everyone carrying that burden today and in the weeks, months and years ahead.”
