The Decatur Police Department in Illinois has wrapped up a successful speeding initiative, issuing over 140 citations specifically related to speeding violations.

Running from July 8 to August 1, the “Speeding Catches Up With You” campaign aimed to promote safer driving practices. This effort was part of a larger, statewide initiative that included various law enforcement agencies, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and Illinois State Police. The central goal was to decrease roadway fatalities and injuries caused by excessive speeding.

Decatur Police issued the following citations during the enforcement period:

  • 74 speeding citations
  • 72 speeding warnings
  • 12 uninsured motorists
  • 5 DUI arrests
  • 4 suspended/revoked licenses
  • 2 child car seat citations
  • 2 reckless driving citations
  • 1 seat belt citation

“We continue to urge all drivers traveling through our community to slow down, obey

speed limits and drive responsibly,” said Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer. “Every decision you

make behind the wheel matters — it’s truly not a game.”

In total, 172 citations were issued during the speed enforcement efforts.

This campaign complemented IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” message, highlighting the severe consequences of reckless driving. Financial support for this speed enforcement effort came from federal highway safety funds managed by IDOT.
