U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy Reportedly Suffers Stroke in Front of Son

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke during his son’s hockey game, his office announced Sunday.

The 53-year-old Democrat developed numbness in his arm while attending the game Saturday and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Murphy was later transferred to Johns Hopkins in Maryland, where he remains “awake and alert,” chief of staff Allison Herwitt said.

Doctors expect Murphy to make a full recovery, according to Herwitt.

Herwitt did not disclose the type of stroke Murphy experienced or provide details about how long he may remain in the hospital.

Murphy, who has been mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, is not up for reelection until 2030. In recent weeks, however, he had been traveling around the country to campaign for midterm candidates, making stops in Michigan, Minnesota and Florida.

He had been scheduled to appear in New Hampshire Sunday, where Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., is in a tight contest with former Republican Sen. John E. Sununu for the seat held by retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.

Murphy has two teenage sons with his ex-wife, attorney Cathy Holahan. The couple finalized their divorce in July, nearly two years after publicly announcing their separation.

Several months after the split, Murphy was seen in an affectionate exchange with Democratic digital strategist Tara McGowan, founder of the progressive outlet Courier Newsroom. McGowan is 12 years younger than Murphy, The Post reported last year.

Murphy’s medical emergency came two days before Tuesday’s midterm elections and shortly after he condemned a reported Pentagon proposal to resume the war with Iran after Election Day. In a post on X, Murphy said he had been briefed on the plan and called it “insane.”

First elected to the Senate in 2012, Murphy won a third term in 2024. He gained national attention as one of Congress’ most outspoken advocates for gun control after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, which was then part of his House district.
