Delays range from an hour to over four and a half depending on the flight’s origin and destination.

SAN FRANCISCO — United Airlines flights were grounded across the country Wednesday evening due to a “technology issue.”

Flights departing from San Francisco International in California, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, Texas, Denver International in Colorado, Chicago O’Hare International in Illinois, Ronald Reagan Washington National in D.C., and Newark International in New York experienced disruptions, as reported by the FAA’s National Airspace System Status.

Grounding alerts from the FAA started lifting on the West Coast around 9 p.m. ET, with the others expected to resolve by 10 p.m. ET.

“Due to a technical issue, we have temporarily suspended United mainline departures. As we address this problem, further delays are anticipated throughout this evening,” the company stated in a release. “Ensuring safety is our utmost priority, and we’re committed to assisting our customers in reaching their destinations.”

The company is also replying to users on social media complaining about delays.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are aware of the system glitch and our teams are diligently working to rectify it to get you moving,” the company posted on X.

“We sincerely apologize for today’s interruption. Our teams are actively resolving the technological outage as swiftly as possible, and we appreciate your patience,” they conveyed to another customer.

Upon reviewing United’s website for flight updates, delays vary widely, from an hour to more than four and a half hours, hinging on the specific departure and arrival points.

“Please be informed that your flight is delayed as we work through a technology issue,” reads a message for select flights with extended delays on the site. “We respect your time and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

No additional information is available at this time and it’s unclear what caused the error, or when it may be resolved.
