A man carrying a pistol was fatally shot Thursday after a confrontation at a security checkpoint inside a federal courthouse in Nashville, Tennessee, police said.
The man, who was in his 40s, allegedly tried to fire the weapon, but it did not discharge, according to Don Aaron, a spokesperson for the Metro Nashville Police Department.
A courthouse security officer then opened fire, Aaron said. The armed man was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said the man was believed to be from outside Tennessee, but they did not disclose why he had come to the courthouse. A neighboring library was closed following the shooting.
Everyone entering the courthouse is required to pass through a security screening checkpoint.
“That’s the entrance that most people in this courthouse use,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Rob McGuire said.
Following the shooting, police officers and K-9 units searched around the courthouse perimeter, while employees from nearby buildings stood outside and watched the response unfold.
