ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A family in Central Florida is devastated and seeking justice following the hit-and-run death of a man in a wheelchair on Sunday night, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. near the junction of State Road 436 and State Road 50. Troopers report that 48-year-old Pedro Castro was crossing the street in his wheelchair when a dark-colored sedan struck him.

The driver did not stop, troopers said.

Castro’s daughter, Naomi Castro, told News 6 her family is devastated by the sudden loss.

“What went through your mind when you heard somebody hit your father with their vehicle and kept going? I was like, ‘What? Are you kidding me?’” she expressed.

Naomi says her father was a beloved family man, known for his humor and cooking.

“How can anyone, any human being, do that to another human being? It’s so cruel,” she stated. “You would assume you had some compassion to stop and check if he’s okay. But the fact that they just kept going, it frustrates me.”

The Florida Highway Patrol released surveillance footage of the crash in hopes of generating leads and identifying the driver.

“Unfortunately I watched it today,” Naomi mentioned regarding the surveillance footage. “I wasn’t aware of its existence until family and coworkers notified me about it,” she said.

The family is urging anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle involved to come forward.

“Please, for the love of God, if there’s any trace of humanity in you, please come forward,” urged Naomi. “If you know something, if you’ve seen it, if you’re aware of anything, please come out and report it.”

A fundraising page for the family has been created, which can be found here.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous.
