Illinois in the midst of a teacher shortage -- but some districts able to add to their numbers

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Research in education indicates that Illinois faces the need to fill thousands of teaching roles for the upcoming school year. Amid the ongoing shortage of teachers, there is some positive news: one district is celebrating having successfully filled over a hundred roles.

The district hosted a signing day. Unlike athletes choosing between schools, these educators signed their commitment letters to join the Champaign school district. This helps fill crucial positions that are in demand in the district and many others throughout central Illinois.

“We know that outside of parents, teachers have the greatest impact on a child’s learning.” said Golden Apple President Alan Mather.

Looking toward the 2025-26 school year, the state still lacks enough teachers. Recent research shows there are nearly four thousand teaching vacancies, with 87 percent of school leaders reporting a teacher shortage.

“Having a classroom that does not have a teacher truly impacts the student’s education.” said Mather.

Mather is trying to prevent this scenario. They offer two programs to help incentivize people to become teachers.

“The scholars recruit high school seniors through college sophomores,” said Mather. “We offer them up to $23,000 in support throughout their undergraduate education, along with mentorship during their early teaching years.”

For those who have already graduated, there is an option as well. The accelerators program enables individuals already in the workforce to earn a certificate in classroom teaching within 15 months. Mather noted that they’ve placed teachers in Champaign’s district schools, which recently celebrated a signing day for about 130 new teachers.

“The highlight for me is seeing those smiles as they come onto the stage, the high fives, and the vibrant energy they bring with them,” said Assistant Director of H.R. Nancy Whitehouse.

The district had more than two hundred openings for this year — and now a majority are filled.

“We have a really great group and they’re bringing a lot of expertise with them.” said Whitehouse.

They say they put an emphasis on special education — hiring 16 into the department. Like Monique Buford — who’s been in the field for over a decade.

“Really found a passion, a love for it.” said Buford, “And that then let me know this is where I belong. And I’ve just been working with that population ever since.”

And she’s ready to bring her expertise to Champaign.

“I’m very ecstatic. I can’t wait.” said Buford.

The district still has positions open. You can look at what’s available and apply here. For more information on Golden Apple’s programs, you can find that here.
