BUNIA – Ebola deaths in Congo have surpassed 5,000 as the outbreak continues to spread and infections are reported in other African countries, according to government data released Saturday. Figures from Congo’s Ministry of Health show that 5,026 of the 10,351 people infected have died, putting the outbreak’s case-fatality rate at nearly 50%. The sharp rise in deaths is fueling concern among health experts about whether authorities can contain the highly lethal virus.
