Fort Stewart Shooting: Who Is The Suspect?

Officials have identified Sgt. Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old soldier from Jacksonville, Florida, is the suspect in a shooting that took place at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Radford has been serving in the Army since 2018 as an automated logistical specialist with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He has no combat experience, and officials report no previous behavioral issues on record.

According to law enforcement, the shooting may have followed a dispute Radford had with one of the victims the day before. On Wednesday morning, he allegedly brought a 9mm handgun—legally purchased in Florida in May—to the base, followed the individual to a maintenance area, and shot them in the chest. He then allegedly shot four additional soldiers before being physically restrained by fellow service members.

He was taken into custody at 11:35 a.m., roughly 40 minutes after the first shots were fired. Investigators recovered the weapon and several shell casings at the scene. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

The victims include five soldiers, two of whom were transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. The other three were treated at a military hospital. All are in stable condition and expected to recover.

Radford remains in Army pretrial confinement and is under the jurisdiction of the Army Criminal Investigation Division. His case will be handled by the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel (OSTC), which is preparing to file charges. A court-martial—the military equivalent of a trial—is expected to follow.

According to the Department of Defense, military commanders ultimately decide whether charges are pursued and what disciplinary action is taken.
