Zoo's request for donations of pets to be fed to predatory animals draws PETA blowback

A European zoo is offering a unique program that allows the public to transform unwanted pets into food for its carnivorous animals. They are seeking the donation of surplus rabbits and guinea pigs to be euthanized and served to their predators.

The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark made this announcement on Facebook, which led to significant public dissatisfaction and drew criticism from animal rights organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

“If you have a pet that, for various reasons, cannot stay with you, feel free to donate it to us,” the zoo stated in their post. “The animals are euthanized humanely by skilled staff, and then used as nourishment. This ensures nothing is wasted and promotes natural behavior, proper nutrition, and health for our predatory animals.”

The zoo welcomes contributions of chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs from both private citizens and businesses, noting these animals are crucial components of their predators’ diets.

PETA added if the Aalborg Zoo “truly cares about animals,” it should focus on protecting species in their natural habitats.

The zoo later turned off the comments on its Facebook post detailing the program, citing “significant international interest.”

“We understand this announcement stirs emotions and interest, but we urge against using hostile or harmful language,” zoo leadership noted. “We invite questions and are ready to provide further details via private messages or email.”

The Aalborg Zoo and PETA did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
