How to Turn Off Instagram's New Map Feature

This week, Instagram introduced a new “Instagram Map” feature, allowing users to share their current location while using the app. According to TechCrunch, this is comparable to Snapchat’s “Snap Map.” Previously, in November 2024, Instagram had implemented location-sharing; however, it was limited to direct messages.

This introduction has sparked numerous social media discussions concerning safety. In a statement to the New York Post, Meta explained that Instagram Map is “off by default, and your live location is only shared if you opt to activate it. When enabled, only followers or a private, custom list you select can view your location.”

On Thursday, Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, addressed the issue on the app: “Quick Friend Map clarification: your location is only shared if you choose to share it, and, when you do, it’s only shared with a select group of people you specify. Initially, location sharing is completely off.”

“Personally, I use the map to share what I’m up to with a handful of my closest friends, and I curate that list carefully,” he wrote.

Nonetheless, some users commented that their location was activated by default without their awareness. Several Reddit discussions have echoed this concern. Here are some steps to ensure it’s disabled if you prefer.

How to turn off your location on Instagram Map

  • Go to your DM inbox, and select the “Map” circle next to “Notes.”
  • Open the map view (you’ll see your friends who are sharing locations, whether yours is off or on).
  • In the top right corner, select “Settings.”
  • You’ll see a prompt: “Who can see your location?” and then select “No one.”
  • Hit “Done” to save.
