DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is honoring the police officer who lost his life while confronting a shooter on Friday near the Emory Atlanta campus.

In a post on Facebook, JSO made statement honoring the life of DeKalb County Officer David Rose, who first joined his department in September 2024.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of DeKalb County Officer David Rose, who was tragically ambushed and killed in a shooting at Emory University in Georgia,” stated JSO. “Officer Rose devoted his life to service, both as a police officer for his community and as a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps.”

The gunfire incident, occurring right outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), triggered a significant response from law enforcement at one of the country’s foremost public health sites, though no additional injuries were reported.

Director Susan Monarez mentioned that at least four CDC buildings were struck, as shared in a post on X. Photos from employees showed several buildings of the agency with bullet-marked windows, highlighting the extent of the impact at a facility where numerous scientists and staff work on vital disease research.

The perpetrator was discovered on the second floor of a building opposite the CDC complex and died at the scene, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.

The assailant was carrying a long gun, and three other firearms were retrieved at the scene, as confirmed by a law enforcement official who requested anonymity due to being unauthorized to speak about the active investigation.

Rose was 33-years-old and leaves behind a wife, two children and a third child that’s on the way.

“This heartbreaking loss is a solemn reminder of the risks the men and women of law enforcement face every day to protect and serve,” JSO says “We pray for all those affected by this tragedy and ask for your continued prayers and support for law enforcement officers across the nation.”
