SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Medical crises can occur anywhere and at any moment. A family discovered this firsthand recently, and now, three children are being recognized for aiding in the rescue of their grandmother in Savoy.

Last month, Elaine Wrinkle suffered a stroke in her living room. Fortunately, her grandchildren and their friend were present and quickly called 911. This is why the three have been named Tuesday night’s Everyday Heroes.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart, because if they hadn’t reacted the way they did with such bravery, I wouldn’t be here today,” Wrinkle expressed.

The three kids accepted an award for their heroism at the Savoy Fire Department, and then got an all access tour.

“I drove the ambulance that day, the medics were in the back and we got the patient there with enough time to get help,” Zach Kleiss said.

Kliess with Savoy Fire was one of the firefighters responding that July 10 afternoon.

“That takes a lot of bravery to do that, to call an adult for help like that, so I would say they were very brave and very smart,” Kleiss said.

And their actions on that day, all leading to this: Getting to train like real firefighters, putting out a stovetop fire and saving a stuffed animal.

All in a days work for these three newly honored heroes who Elaine Wrinkle won’t soon forget.

“Just like when we were looking at the ambulance, that was the same one I rode in, I became emotional, realizing I might not have reached the hospital,” Wrinkle reflected. “I might not have survived if they hadn’t taken the action they did to save me.”

Seth Vermillion, along with Lyrell and Lyarron Jr. Emers, were officially honored two weeks ago at the Savoy Village Board Meeting, where they received lifesaving awards for their role in saving Elaine.
