AUGUSTA, Ga. () – The Richmond County School System held a transportation job fair on Wednesday.

The county is looking for bus drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and other transportation roles.

Kenneth Johnson Jr., who serves as the Director of Human Resources for the Richmond County School System, mentions that although they are nearly fully staffed with teachers, there remains a need for more support staff.

“There are teachers and then there are those who support the teachers. These employees ensure our precious cargo is transported to and from school safely and on time every day,” stated Johnson.

Johnson says finding bus drivers is a local, regional and state wide issue.

“Continuously finding individuals who are willing to take on the bus driver roles, aware of the challenges involved in those responsibilities, is always a priority for us. These positions can sometimes be challenging to fill,” Johnson expressed.

He tells me bus drivers play a vital role not only for the school systems but for our community as well.

“Considering the responsibility of operating a vehicle that transports 40 to 50 or more students, it’s crucial that these individuals are qualified and possess the necessary licenses and certifications,” Johnson explained.
