Spencer passed away on August 11, 2025, in a Richmond, Virginia hospital after enduring years of health complications. A family spokesperson confirmed she succumbed to gastric cancer and cardiac arrest.
Her health challenges started in 2014 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, resulting in a double mastectomy. Subsequent difficulties arose from a 1977 car accident that caused enduring spinal and neurological problems.
In 2018, she required emergency brain surgery due to a bleeding hematoma, a delayed consequence of the accident. Nevertheless, she showed remarkable resilience throughout her hardships.
