Michigan’s Senate contest is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched races of the cycle. For Democrats, the path to reclaiming control of the Senate almost certainly runs through the Great Lakes State, making a hold in Michigan essential. Republicans, meanwhile, see a real opening with former Rep. Mike Rogers emerging as a competitive contender.
Current polling underscores just how tight the race has become. The RealClearPolitics average shows Rogers ahead by one point, while a recent Fox News poll put him up by four. CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has described El-Sayed as “historically unpopular,” adding to concerns about his general-election standing. Some observers have also argued that Fox polling has, at times, leaned more favorably toward Democrats—raising the possibility that Rogers’ advantage could be larger than the topline numbers suggest.
El-Sayed faces a difficult road ahead. Primary results suggested weaknesses with working-class voters and Black voters, two groups Democrats typically need to mobilize in Michigan. His more left-wing positions have also unsettled some Democrats, with a number of them now backing his opponent. Complicating matters further is his association with controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, a connection that could prove costly in a statewide general election.
