A 27-year-old woman was found beaten to death inside a Manhattan apartment on Sunday, and investigators say a young child had been left alone with her body for an undetermined amount of time, according to police sources.
NYPD officers made the grim discovery while conducting a wellness check at the Washington Heights residence on 156th Street near Amsterdam Avenue shortly after 1:30 p.m., police and sources said. Inside the apartment, they found the woman dead and a 5-year-old child who was not physically injured.
Authorities said the woman had suffered severe trauma to her face and neck.
Sources told The Post the fatal attack appears to be domestic in nature, though the suspect remained at large Sunday. Officials had not immediately clarified the relationship between the victim and the person believed to be responsible.
The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause of death, police said.
The woman’s name was being withheld until her relatives could be notified.
