TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Friday marks the deadline for candidates to register for September’s special election to fill the vacant Tampa District 5 city council seat, following the passing of Councilwoman Gwen Henderson.

The Tiger Bay Club of Tampa has organized a moderated session with all registered candidates for Friday afternoon. By Friday morning, 14 individuals had announced their candidacy for the election.

Richedean Hills-Ackbar is a lifelong resident of District 5 and believes there’s been a void in the community since Henderson’s death.

“She showed up to a lot of the local meetings, and she wasn’t afraid to answer questions,” Hills-Ackbar said.

Seven candidates joined a forum at Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Library, outlining their proposals concerning housing, business development, and support for the East Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency.

Hills-Ackbar emphasizes, “It’s crucial to have someone who genuinely cares for this community, is part of it, responds to phone calls, with concerns truly aligned with the community’s needs.”

“It’s tough out here, yet elected officials promise to act for the people, but often, they fail to deliver once in office,” says another District 5 voter.

The winner of the election will serve families residing in downtown areas, including the Channel District, Ybor City, and neighborhoods like West and East Tampa, Sulphur Springs, McKay Bay, and Palmetto Beach.

“I hope their intentions are to do their best for the community and their intentions are to serve the people of District 5. If they’re not here for that, they can just keep it moving,” describes Hills-Ackbar.
