“Bones” was primarily celebrated for the intense chemistry between Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), along with its complex murder mysteries. However, no show is without its shortcomings. Deschanel expressed significant concerns over one recurring theme in the series — the frequent use of terrorism-related storylines.
In an interview with TV Insider, Deschanel discussed how she dealt with burnout from the show. She eventually overcame this while revisiting episodes for her “Bones” rewatch podcast, “Boneheads.” During the interview, she revealed, “When episodes would delve into terrorism, it often didn’t sit right with me, both at the time and in retrospect. It was uncomfortable.”
Given that “Bones” addressed crime-solving in a post-9/11 world, it isn’t surprising that the series occasionally incorporated controversial stereotypes, leading to some episodes that fans struggled with. Despite this shortcoming, Deschanel still appreciates what she and the show achieved and looks back on it positively.
Emily Deschanel still admits she loves Bones, even though it’s got its problematic spots
In the TV Line interview, Deschanel emphasized that she still cherishes her experience on “Bones” despite its imperfections. She said, “I’ve grown to appreciate watching it more now than before. Previously, I would be overly critical, but now I feel a genuine affection for the show and what we created at that time. My perspective has shifted, and I have a newfound appreciation for it.” Furthermore, since the show was a significant part of her life, she’s grateful that it maintains a dedicated fan base.
“Boneheads” — featuring Deschanel and her co-star Carla Gallo — has reached the second season as of now. This offers fans ample opportunity to join Deschanel on the rewatch journey. Despite its flaws, revisiting “Bones” can uncover elements you might have missed the first time.
