Irish Authorities Seek Extradition in American Mom Jamey Carney’s Murder

Irish officials are reportedly moving to secure a warrant aimed at extraditing the main suspect in the killing of Jamey Carney, a 43-year-old mother from New York who was found beaten and suffocated inside her home in Killarney last month.

Carney, who shared glimpses of her life overseas under the identity of a “New Yorker in Ireland,” was discovered dead by her teenage daughter on July 7.

Investigators suspect her partner, a Jordanian national who had been seeking asylum in Ireland, fatally assaulted her before leaving the country on a hastily booked flight to Istanbul. He later traveled on to Jordan, where authorities subsequently detained him.

According to The Irish Mirror, investigators have sent a case file to Ireland’s Director of Public Prosecutions, recommending that murder charges be pursued. The DPP is now examining the evidence before deciding whether formal charges should be filed.

Should prosecutors authorize the case, Irish authorities may face a complicated international process to return the suspect, since Ireland does not have a formal extradition treaty with Jordan.

An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service, declined to discuss the details of the case when contacted by News Outlet.

“The Garda investigation into the murder of Jamey Carney is ongoing,” a spokesperson for the force said. “A file has been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said every diplomatic and judicial channel would be explored to ensure justice is served, The Irish Independent reported.

“The gardaí are obviously pursuing a very clear line of inquiry. The person they want to speak to left the country before the body of the late Ms. Carney was discovered,” he said.

The suspect initially arrived in the United Kingdom before crossing through Northern Ireland to settle in County Kerry.

While living in a state-run accommodation for asylum seekers, he worked in hospitality and construction and began spending increased time at Carney’s home after they became romantically involved.

Carney’s social media posts featured her partner, whom she referred to as part of a “mixed couple,” and noted that she had recently begun learning Arabic.

The Irish Independent reported that the suspect had expressed a desire to relocate to the United States and told acquaintances Carney was assisting him with securing U.S. residency.
