The Warrens are preparing to take their final bow. Following three sequels and a vast cinematic world revolving around the various cursed items in the couple’s occult museum, the last “Conjuring” movie is set for release this September. For those looking to recap all the cases the notable couple has investigated on the big screen since the debut film captivated audiences worldwide, be sure to view the video linked above.

The dramatized exploits of actual demonologists Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) have enjoyed considerable box office success and have been well-received by critics. The initial film boasts an 86% fresh critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $319.5 million. “The Conjuring 2” surpassed this slightly, earning $320.4 million globally while also receiving praise with an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The chilling third film, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” marked a pivotal moment for the series; although it amassed $206.4 million amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it became the first film in the series to receive a “rotten” score of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Will this conclusive movie return the series to its former critical acclaim?

The Conjuring: Last Rites will take it all home

Similar to its predecessors, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” draws from a true case involving the Warrens. This time, it focuses on the haunting of the Smurl family, which forms the central narrative of the film. Set in Pennsylvania in 1986, the Smurls have endured demonic torment for over a year before enlisting the Warrens’ help. They report enduring all sorts of violent disturbances, including sexual assaults, since the demons began their terror. Although approaching retirement, the Warrens accept the case, but they soon discover that their initial target is a terrifying entity that even drives them to flee in horror.

In reality, the Smurls weren’t exorcised by the Warrens but rather by a local priest. They subsequently relocated within Pennsylvania, and their former home was taken over by new residents, who claimed to experience no supernatural occurrences. How closely “Last Rites” will stick to these facts remains uncertain. Given that the “Conjuring” films often take creative liberties with their stories, it’s difficult to predict what will appear on the screen when the film releases on September 5.
