'Fight the Trump Takeover' Protests on Saturday Over TX Redistricting, D.C. Safety Issues Fall Flat

The Texas Democrats who left their state to disrupt quorum and stop a redistricting plan from advancing in the state legislature are reportedly returning to Texas on Monday.

They’re taking this weekend to get some final whining in.

“It’s been exceptionally challenging for the members to remain out of Texas, away from their jobs, children, and families,” expressed state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, who is also campaigning for the lieutenant governor position in 2026. “Moreover, the $500 daily fine is quite costly. Therefore, some members believed they could commit to breaking quorum for one session but couldn’t sustain it indefinitely.”

Texas state Rep. John Bucy was upset he didn’t get to take his daughter to her first day of kindergarten. He rationalized it this way:

During an interview with the Tribune in downtown Chicago, Bucy mentioned about his two daughters, “They don’t understand it today. My older daughter appears a bit frustrated with me, but someday, perhaps a decade from now, she’ll read about this period and study Donald Trump’s authoritarian power grab. I hope there’s a mention of her dad standing up to it, and I believe that will have more significance than missing her first day of school.”

It’s amusing to me. Any fines or personal losses are their responsibility — they made the choice to flee and protest. Historically, if anyone remembers this episode, it will be because they lost after causing such a stir. They accomplished nothing.

Currently, they are attempting to portray this as a triumph by arguing that California Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to alter the maps there. This highlights their hypocrisy — they find it acceptable if Newsom works around the independent commission to modify matters in his state.

They’re also participating in protests on Saturday. There was a supposed “Fight the Trump Takeover” demonstration scheduled in approximately 30 cities, addressing various issues such as Texas redistricting and Trump’s response to D.C. crime. I examined the cities expected to host these protests. The only ones with notable turnout were Austin, Texas; Washington, D.C.; and Chicago, Illinois. By “notable,” I mean Austin drew “hundreds” according to one local station, and at one point, D.C. had about 1,500 people. That’s minimal.

Texas state Rep. Gene Wu was out in Chicago:

I’m sure that the drag artist being involved will help:

And if he doesn’t make it happen, then there’s always Beto O’Rourke cursing that should do the trick.

Warning for graphic language:

If your party’s loudest and silliest voice is the guy who keeps losing, you may have a problem. Beto hilariously claims (at about 2:00 in the clip) that if Republicans lose power, the Dems will have the “opportunity to hold free and fair elections in this country once again.” Ding, ding, ding, election denialism! It’s only unfair when Democrats lose, I guess. He claimed they aren’t “going to bend the knee.” Just run away like cowards who can’t handle losing democratically. “Whatever the f***ing maps are, we are going to win them in this state.” Because you have such a record of winning. Not.

Then there was the D.C. protest, which focused on Trump’s anti-crime actions, deploying federal agents and the National Guard to the capital city. The protesters chanted “Free D.C.,” which is actually what Trump is trying to do – free them from crime and violence.

The protesters also heckled the National Guard. One leftist even called them, “Class traitors!” Meanwhile, National Guard members are part of the military who protect all of us. And these characters treat them this way.

The funniest moment of the day was this speaker n D.C., who insisted that “there are many more of us than there are of them.”

No, there aren’t. 77 million voted for Trump. Meanwhile, you guys have a pitiful showing of radicals. If this was supposed to draw out the resistance, it didn’t draw out much.

The speaker said they had to direct all that to the only thing that measured up to the existential threat to humanity. “The whole Trump fascist regime must be driven from power!” she ranted. The crowd cheered. That sounds a bit insurrection-y – how do they intend to do that? They’re mostly just bull. And it’s, again, funny – they’re “fighting” that something is being done about crime. How crazy do you have to be to do that?

This is where Democrats are, and it’s wild to see them keep sinking themselves like this.
