Trump makes bizarre new Ukraine claim hours before crucial meeting

This morning, through a post on Truth Social, the US president seemed to suggest that the responsibility for brokering a ceasefire or peace agreement lies more with Zelenskyy than with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the conflict with Russia almost at once if he chooses to, or he can continue the fight,” Trump stated.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and leaders from Italy, Finland, NATO, and the European Union, will all join Zelenskyy.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has once again expressed willingness to deploy troops as a part of any potential United Nations peacekeeping mission, stating he would evaluate any request made.

However, he said there was a long way to go before those discussions could take place.

“We know that Mr Putin has designs on not just Ukraine,” Albanese told Sky News.

“The concern is certainly there, and there is certainly a lack of trust between Mr Putin and European and other leaders of democracies.

“We support Ukraine, and we want peace in the region. It is crucial that Ukraine is not forced into a settlement. They should be involved in the discussions.”
