Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kyle Alexander Eakin Coady, 27, was taken into custody late last night after allegedly crashing his vehicle into an occupied condominium. The impact caused the patio to collapse and damaged the front wall, window, and door of the residence.

At approximately 11:18 p.m. on August 16, officers from the Gainesville Police Department were dispatched to Grantwood Condominiums (2508 SW 35th Place). Upon arrival, they discovered a vehicle that had barreled through the residence’s front door, toppling the privacy wall in front of the front patio, along with the front door, the cinderblock main wall, and the front window.

The condominium’s two occupants informed an officer that they had no acquaintance with Coady and were unaware of who he was; Coady’s registered address is located in a different section of the same condominium complex.

According to the victims, after the crash, Coady exited his vehicle and laid down on the ground but subsequently stood up and entered their residence via the shattered front window. The male resident urged Coady to halt, but reported that Coady disregarded him and continued inside.

The male resident positioned himself between Coady and the female resident, eventually resorting to punching Coady to prevent him from advancing further into the home; he noted that Coady had ignored numerous verbal commands to stop and leave their premises.

When officers reached the scene, they reportedly found Coady outside the residence but within the patio area, where fallen debris obstructed a clear exit. As officers ordered Coady to stop and display his hands, he allegedly ignored the instructions and climbed over the wreckage and his vehicle to leave the patio. Coady purportedly refused to comply with demands to lie down and started to flee, requiring several officers to subdue him.

Post Miranda, Coady reportedly said he had taken four or five edible mushroom gummies and did not recall much from the incident except that he heard people yelling at him to get out, and he remembered climbing out of a broken window.

DUI charges are pending the results of a blood sample.

Coady has been charged with two counts of burglary to an occupied residence and resisting an officer without violence. He has no local criminal history. He is currently being held without bond until he can attend a First Appearance hearing after he is released from the hospital.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
