Two Florida men are in custody over an alleged kidnapping and murder plot in which the suspects reportedly impersonated police officers. Investigators say additional people could still be connected to the crime.
Eddrick Malik Bethune, 22, was found dead on the morning of Oct. 4, according to local ABC affiliate WPLG. Devorise Carl Johnson, 21, and Naquon Jahrell Fagan, 25, are accused of kidnapping and killing him. Police records suggest that as many as five people may have played a role in the slaying.
Following the shooting, the suspects allegedly “attempted to destroy the Toyota Camry [] by igniting the vehicle on fire,” according to the affidavit.
Records from the Miami-Dade Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation show that Johnson and Fagan remain in custody. Both face charges that include first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery and falsely impersonating a police officer.
Court records did not immediately list upcoming hearing dates.
Investigators connected one suspect to the Toyota Camry through rental-car records. Cellphone data and surveillance video also allegedly placed Fagan at the crime scene and at a nearby Family Dollar several hours before the kidnapping. The footage reportedly shows Fagan “buying black gloves—matching those worn by a suspect during the abduction,” the affidavit states.
Fagan was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 21, while Johnson was taken into custody earlier this month, according to a WPLG report.
