Emergency services were called to Regiment Grove in Winston Hills about 7pm today in response to reports of the public shooting.
Paramedics treated him and rushed him to Westmead Hospital but he later died.
Police established a crime scene as local and homicide squad detectives began an investigation.
One teenager said she saw the police lights from her bedroom window before heading out onto the street with her father.
“I saw a policeman taping off the road and a man on a stretcher being pulled up into an ambulance with a gunshot wound in his chest,” she said, describing him as “not well”.
David, another resident, said he was “very surprised” to have something like this take police in his neighbourhood.
“[I’m] very worried. It’s a nice area. I have my kids here,” he said.
“They go to school in the area, and it’s a really nice area and I’m just, yeah, very concerned about it.”
It’s the second fatal public shooting in Sydney in a matter of days, following the Forest Lodge pub attack that killed Gilbert Admon Shino, 39, and left Maradona Yalda, 31, needing surgery.
There’s no information to suggest the two shootings are linked.
