Apple has filed a lawsuit against a former Apple Watch team member who joined Oppo, accusing him of plotting to take Apple’s trade secrets about the Apple Watch and sharing them with his new employer.
The former employee, Dr. Chen Shi, reportedly participated in many meetings with technical members of the Apple Watch team to gather insights into their projects before departing for Oppo, as claimed in the lawsuit. He allegedly transferred 63 documents from a secured Box folder to a USB drive. It’s also suggested that Shi informed Oppo of his intentions to “gather as much information as possible” before his exit. Additionally, Shi searched the internet using phrases like “how to wipe out macbook” and “Can somebody see if I’ve opened a file on a shared drive?” on his work MacBook prior to leaving Apple.
Shi previously held the role of a sensor system architect at Apple and was reportedly privy to advanced health sensor technology developments, including secret blueprints, design and development documents, and specifications for ECG sensor technology.
Shi currently leads a sensing technology team at Oppo, information Apple says it discovered through messages on his company-issued iPhone. In his farewell letter to Apple, Shi mentioned his departure was “due to personal and family reasons.” Apple also claims that messages from Oppo encouraged and supported Dr. Shi’s efforts to gather Apple’s confidential information before his departure, as discovered through the iPhone.
When The Verge tried to contact Oppo for comment, the email bounced back because the mailbox was full.
