Israeli offensive bears down on Gaza, leaving fleeing Palestinians with few options

Subhi Muhammad Asfour made his way to northern Gaza hoping to find sustenance, shelter, and a glimmer of hope. However, he and his family now face hunger and fear, as Israeli evacuation orders may compel them to relocate for the seventh time since the conflict erupted.

“I came to western Gaza trying to pitch a tent,” explained Asfour, 46, during a phone interview with NBC News on Friday. He noted that moving his family, as directed by the Israeli military, could incur expenses of $500 or more.

“I don’t have money,” he said.

Amid Israel’s escalating military campaign to capture Gaza City, many people like Asfour face the prospect of being uprooted once again, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation. Following the announcement of the initial phase of this operation, the area has seen intense bombardments increasing the burden on those living there.

Under threat of worsening violence, Asfour doesn’t know how he can take care of wife, four children, sister and parents.

“I’m afraid for my children, but where can I go?” he said. “There’s no place and no safety.”

As efforts to find sanctuary continue, Asfour endures relentless air assaults and worsening conditions, particularly following the global authority on hunger’s declaration of famine in northern Gaza, which includes Gaza City, on Friday.
