MCCORMICK, Sc () – A campground in McCormick has finally reopened just in time for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Hawe Creek Campground, among the 7 campgrounds run by the Army Corps, had to shut down because of the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. This weekend, however, campers are thrilled to be reconnecting with nature once more.

Thanks to funding from the Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads, both contractors and the Army Corps managed to clear the debris and reopen the campground for the final weeks of the camping season.

I spoke with campers who went to the campground before Helene and they tell me some of the differences they noticed.

“It looks like the trees are more spread out than before Hurricane Helene hit. Although I haven’t explored the entire campground yet, it definitely feels more open, and the view of the lake is much clearer,” said Edgar Lindler.

While it took contractors time to remove tons of debris and trees, Melbin Smith tells me it was well worth the wait.

“It’s good, they’ve done a nice job the only thing they need to do is stay open longer, all year,” Smith said.

This group of friends, who have been camping together for over 25 years, is visiting Hawe Creek Campground for the third time. They shared with me why they continue to return to this spot.

“It’s private sites that are secluded, it’s not real crowded, it’s just wonderful,” said Donna Smith.

“It’s nice lake sitting,” Lindler said.

The campground will be open until Labor Day weekend.
