The shooting happened around 1:17 p.m. in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue in Kenwood, Chicago police said.
The victim, a 5-year-old boy, was inside an apartment at the location when he was shot in the head, police said.
The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
The family of the child has been in communication with a local pastor at the hospital. Pastor Donovan Price expressed that, although the child has suffered a gunshot wound to the head, the family remains hopeful for a recovery.
Pastor Price spent a couple of hours at the hospital with the child’s family.
“It appears that the gunshot was self-inflicted by the child who managed to access the gun,” Price commented. “This seems to be a heartbreaking accident. Such a lovely family. It’s one of those incidents you always hope to avoid, but sadly, a single misstep can lead to tragedy.”
The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known.
Investigators were still at the building late Sunday afternoon, where they said a weapon was recovered.
No one was in custody as Chicago police continue to investigate.
